Free Lock-Box Program Helps First Responders Assist Residents in Emergencies
The City of Cosmopolis is helping spread the word about a free program designed to keep elderly and disabled residents safe during emergencies.
Now in its third year, the APD/AFD Lock-Box Program provides free metal key lock boxes to eligible residents in Aberdeen and Cosmopolis who may need emergency assistance.
The program began as an idea from an Aberdeen Police Department volunteer and was made possible through generous grants from the Grays Harbor Community Foundation.
Each lock box is securely installed outside a resident's home and contains a spare house key. In an emergency, first responders can obtain a unique access code through 911 dispatch, allowing them to enter the home quickly without having to force entry.
This can save valuable time, reduce the risk of injury, and prevent unnecessary damage to homes.
According to Police Chief Green, hundreds of lock boxes are currently active throughout Aberdeen and Cosmopolis, helping provide peace of mind to residents and their families.
How to Request a Free Lock Box
Residents who are elderly or disabled, or family members assisting someone who may benefit from the program, are encouraged to apply.
There is no cost to residents. The program is fully funded through grants, including installation.
To request a lock box, visit the APD/AFD Lock-Box Project webpage and select “Lock Box Request Form.” Program representatives will coordinate installation.
The City of Cosmopolis encourages residents to share this information with neighbors, friends, and family members who may benefit from this valuable community safety resource.
